Chapter Twelve

Lonan picked up their trash and tossed it into the lidded receptacle just outside the parking lot. Madison hopped off the truck and dusted the seat of her jeans. She watched as he closed the tailgate and leaned against it, arms crossed over his chest. “Do you feel up to hiking to the stairway? Roundtrip, it’s probably another four miles.”

“I’m game.” Hopefully her body was, too.

“Good. I’ll get us more water.”

“Lonan! Hey Stone, I need to talk to you.” They turned to see a park employee jogging toward them.

“What’s up, Jason?”

The young man was perhaps her age and his skin almost as fair. His nose was blistered and peeling.

“Need to talk to you.” He glanced toward her and tipped his hat. “Sorry ma’am, but I need to speak to him in private.”

Lonan excused himself, and they moved out of her hearing range.

“What’s going on?” Lonan was afraid it wasn’t something good, or Madison would have been able to listen in.

Breathless, Jason said, “Joe Redhawk called a few minutes ago. It seems some kids stumbled on a body in that small thicket before you enter the Laguna Reservation.”

Oh hell, not the old lady. “Male or female?” he asked, fearing the answer.

“A man, approximately thirty-five years old, about five feet, ten inches tall, and one-hundred-ninety pounds.” He pushed his hat forward and rubbed his neck. “Odd, whoever killed him took all his clothes and identification. Then they left him laying there in his boxers and socks.” He shook his head. “Poor man, I wouldn’t want to be found like that.

“Lordy, but those kids are upset. All of ‘em between the ages of ten or twelve. Ran home hollering at the top of their lungs. From what I hear, it took Joe thirty minutes to get the story out of them. He finally got the oldest one to show him the way.”

Lonan nodded, thinking. They rarely had a crime like this. Usually, if someone was killed, everyone knew who did it because they’d been in a fight. “How was he killed?”

“Bullet right between the eyes, a clean shot. Won’t know what type of weapon until the coroner digs the slug out.”

“Does the chief want me back on duty?” He glanced toward Madison. He hoped not, as he didn’t want her out on her own.

“Naw, he just wanted you to be in the loop, on the lookout, in case someone got in the park with a weapon. Not that they think that’ll happen. He’s taking extra precautions and brought in a firearms canine team to examine every car coming on the premises.”

He patted Lonan on the shoulder. “Now, don’t you worry about a thing. They’ve got a squad over there taking tire impressions and such right now.”

“Do they have any idea when he was killed?”

“Most likely last night sometime.” Jason scratched his chin and glanced toward Madison. “Is it true you and that pretty lady got married?”

“Yep, sure is.”

Jason stuck out his hand. “Well, congratulations, Lonan. Heard it was one of those ‘love at first sight’ experiences.
